Common Mistakes Made When Beginners Learn How To Knit

Any experienced teacher in almost any topic will tell you that 99% of the people they teach make the same mistakes in the early stages of learning the topic. Knitting is no exception. When a person decides to learn how to knit, it is almost inevitable that that person will make the same beginner’s mistakes as the thousands that have gone before them.

In the knitting world, one of the most common mistakes is choosing a pattern that is too complicated for a first project. Almost everyone "aims too high" for their first knitting project. They want to make a gift for a relative or something for a newborn, either their own or a friend’s, and they invariably end up disappointed when the finished product doesn’t really much resemble the pattern shown. Any experienced knitting instructor will tell you that it is best to choose a VERY simple pattern for a first project and assume that the first project will be a "throw-away". Now you may or may not actually throw away your first project, but if you have the mind set that it is only a learning experience, you’ll be in a much better state-of-mind when things don’t go as smoothly as you want them to go on that first project.
