A Brief Tutorial on Alaska’s Plate-able Palandids

Alaska Pink Shrimp are one of five shrimp varieties found in the waters of Alaska.  The other four are Humpy, Coonstripe, Sidestripe, and Spot shrimp.  There are several main differences between the types of Alaskan shrimp including the method of harvesting, flavor, appearance, and preparation techniques.  Despite their differences, as members of the Palandid family of cold-water shrimp that live in the waters off of coastal Alaska they also all share many biological similarities.  Commercial fisheries harvesting shrimp in Alaska date back to 1915, and since then the industry has grown and changed.  Today Alaska Pink Shrimp harvesting is part of an initiative to encourage the sustainability of Alaskan seafood.
