Most Don’t Appeal Property Tax Bills

A recent study showed that fewer than 2% of property owners ever file a property tax appeal. That’s surprising, since some experts say that well over half of the homes in the United States are over-assessed.

There are a number of reasons people decide not to fight their assessments. For one thing, it’s time consuming. Homeowners have to gather a lot of information, and there’s no guarantee of success. Most people have to hire an attorney or consultant, which can be expensive. Additionally, appealing your assessment doesn’t exactly endear you to the folks at City Hall, so there can be political or social implications as well.

It seems many Americans feel it’s not worth the hassle, and simply pay the bill–and then complain about their taxes the rest of the year.
