A Middle Eastern guitar?

The oud is a funny looking little stringed instrument, very similar in design to the American guitar, except that it is the primary instrument of the Arab world. Now the American guitar has six strings on it, whereas, the oud has a five pairs of strings, totaling 10. What adds to the little pear-shaped stringed instruments peculiar sound, is that each of these pairs of strings are actually attuned to an identical pitch. Now, I’ve never seen one with my own eyes, but as I try to expand my musical vocabulary more and more, I find myself embracing this funny looking instrument.
